As opposed to popular belief, Andi Mack's season 3 renewal was not a sure thing!

Today, February 19th 2018, Terri Minsky creator of Andi Mack and Lizzie McGuire had the pleasure of announcing to the cast of Andi Mack that they were renewed for a third season live on Good Morning Amercia.

What started out as an adorable show with a racially diverse cast , Andi Mack quickly became a pioneer show for Disney Channel, being the first to take their characters to places where Disney had always been scared to go before. Making one of their main characters, Cyrus (Joshua Rush), gay and jewish definitely sparked a conversation on what is reprensented in children's entertainment today and the fact that in 2018 we are surprised to see that kind of representation on our screens says a lot about the lack of progress on children's programming. Lizzie McGuire, which was Minsky’s first show on Disney Channel back in 2001, tried to break Disney Channel social barriers before, but did not get picked up for a third season, so this TV show is not only a historical milestone for Disney but also for Minsky.

It is undebatable to say that Andi Mack has been holding up Disney Channel views, which has decreased of 24% since 2016. Their season 2 premiere had rounded out 2.1 Million views and so it would be easy to say that they were for sure going to be renewed, but believe it or not, Andi Mack has been banned in Kenya because they made Cyrus (Joshua Rush) gay. Other countries have expressed their worries about the show and decided not to air the episode where he comes out to his friend Buffy (Sofia Wylie). Being Disney's first ever big risk, creators and writers on the show were worried that Disney Channel would pull the plug on the production because of its small negative feedback, just like they did with Lizzie McGuire.

Thank God, Disney decided to commit to this show and the mixed feedback it was getting and decided to renew it for season 3. Considering the lack of new shows coming to Disney channel in the near future, I wouldn't be surprised that Disney would push the series past their record of 4 seasons, to continue telling the stories of these relatable characters.

I can't wait to see what's in store for this show. I really want Cyrus to tell Jonah how he feels about him but hey who know?

Until next time,

Anthony
